Murchison Australia Day Award Winners
Citizen of the Year – Shelley McCormick
This wonderful member of the community is an extremely well organised person who puts in one hundred percent to all she does.
A competent, reliable member and a secretary of the Murchison football Club for over 20 years, she does it all; Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday games are conducted under her baton with her band of workers.
A calm demeanour and smiling face is seen at many Murchison Activities. Over the years Shelley has been involved in Carols by Candlelight, New Year’s Eve Celebrations, Australia Day, Swimming Pool Committee, Tennis Club and the Murchison Community Plan Committee.
We all know her at the Primary School, tireless and helpful; she manages the complicated systems around her, and steps into many roles, library, Breakfast Club, book fair, After School Care and more.
Employed at the Primary School since 1999, she has had many roles, many unofficial – nurse, counsellor, plumber and handywoman. She is the glue of the community. First to arrive and last to leave, Shelly McCormick is a fine person to win the Murchison Citizen of the Year.
Junior Sports Award Murchison/Dhurringile– Aaron Niglia
Member of the Dhurringile Tennis club and outstanding junior tennis player. Winner of many junior tournaments including Mooroopna 13/u singles, Benalla 15/u singles Shepparton School boys champion singles and doubles. Also excels in soccer being the Tatura Soccer Club 2016 and 2017, best and fairest winner 15/u. Aaron also participated in table tennis and basketball at the highest level and is a wonderful mentor for all junior players at Dhurringile Tennis Club.
Australia Day Young citizen of the year Murchison/Dhurringile – Gabrielle Chessells
Since graduating as a speech pathologist, Gabby has seen the need to extend this science in the Goulburn Valley, hence she has travelled to New Zealand and in Christchurch has engaged with the world’s best speech pathologists so she can train other professionals in new techniques. Her drive and passion to her patients is outstanding. She is also a valued member of the Dhurringile Community, connected to the school and tennis club
