The evening light filtering through shady trees and bunting flags fluttering in the light breeze made a perfect setting for Murchison’s 2017 Carols by Candlelight. A wonderful community environment was created where families and friends could join together, watch the children play and enjoy some fantastic music in the park, a great opportunity for some time out during the hustle and bustle of the festive season.
All the young children loved the music and danced under the trees, along with some of us who are young at heart! A visit from Santa Claus completed the evening, and how the children’s eyes lit up when they received some lollies from the jolly man in red himself. The community atmosphere was strong, with folk connecting with different social groups, new residents joining in and meeting other locals, sharing picnics, sharing laughter and sharing the Christmas spirit that abounds at this time of year.
Its a tradition that many families enjoy at Christmas time and yet in cannot go ahead without the help of some very dedicated volunteers. Murchison Carols was nearly dissolved last year, but thanks to the determination of Alice Cunningham, the event is still one of the most anticipated events on the calendar. Thanks to a grant from the Greater Shepparton City Council and with the support of Murchison Tennis Club, Alice was able to organise a relaxed event, raising $1,000 going towards the club. This was raised mainly from the delicious BBQ provided that sustained the crowd of over 150 people. Much careful planning went into this year’s Carols by Candlelight; from the Murchison Heritage Centre providing power, right down the thoughtful placement of citronella flares ensured that the evening was enjoyed by all who attended. Music was supplied by the Melbourne band “Caravan Kids,” regular performers in the Bourke Street Mall, and who are also known locally for their gigs at the Murchison East Pub.
The evening was a memorable one, enjoyed by all who attended, and Murchison Carols by Candlelight will again be much anticipated along with the festive season of 2018. If you would like to offer your suggestions or volunteer your time for this event, contact the Murchison Tennis Club for details.
